Dear Host Family,
My name is Magdalena. I am 22 years old and I came from Poland. For two years I have been studying in Silesia Medical University. I live in Katowice, which is my hometown, in flat with my friend Wanda. Before I moved out, I used to live with my whole family: my mother — Renata, father — Antoni, sister — Ola and our dog- Mika.
My sister Ola is the best person I know. She is my true friend. She has masters degree in Law from Silesia University and she works in law firm. Now she takes care on her newborn baby — Maria, who is only few weeks old.
My mother works in the office. She is very nice, kind, patient and always has time to listen, talk and help me with everything I need.
My Father is very active person. He loves every sport, is funny and sociable. I love riding bicycle, skating or just walking with him. We understand each other very well. Me and my family spend a lot of time together. When I was younger we always went somewhere for weekends and holidays, like to seaside, mountains, lakes, some interesting city and other places.
I am an active person and I dislike doing nothing. I like to visit new places, ride on bicycle, go for a walk, play volleyball and meet with my friends. I like to cook and it gives me a lot of satisfaction. Besides this activities I spend my spare time reading books (especially Eric Emmanuel Schmitt). I love music. I love listening to good music (my favorite musician is Regina Spector), go to concerts and music festivals.
I am responsible, ambitious person. I am interested in cultural events in my city. I was volunteer in my city and have a lot of good memories, for example I helped with organization of 'Woody Allen and His New Orleans Jazz Band” performance, celebration of 145th birthdays of my hometown or help with organization of 'OFF Music Festival', which is very popular in Poland.
When it comes to my childcare experience, I started in high school and I do it till this day. For three years I was volunteer in kindergarten where I spent time with children: we played together many games, read books, draw and I helped them a lot. I used to go there after my school, two times a week. At the same time I was volunteering in orphanage. Me and my friends decided to help this kids. We organized holiday meeting, fund-raiser in school for a holiday gifts for children and we spent time with this kids, helped with homework, and just played with them. It was really great to give them a bit of smile and happiness.
My next job was in playground for half year. I took care of children, organized birthday parties and day camps. I always had great time there and it was amazing feeling when children came back, with big smile. When I finished my job I worked as a nanny with 3 years old boy Radek. I came in the morning, helped him with morning duties, prepared his breakfast and took him to kindergarten. When he was there I prepared him meals, did washing and ironing of his cloths and cleaned his room. After I picked him up from kindergarten we were spending time together playing, walking, and doing many activities. I worked there for 3 months. After my adventure as a nanny I worked in other playground for next half year and when I finished, I became a governess. For two years I took care of a girl named Kinga. She is 6 years old now. We always spent our time in creative way. We went together for a walk, to ZOO, carnival, playground, city center, parks, forest and many other attractive place. As a governess I was obliged to teach her counting, reading, writing and give her knowledge of animals, world and others. Additionally I taught her skating and riding bike (on two wheels). It is a big pleasure, when you see effects of your hard work. I helped Kinga In her daily duties, like keeping her room clean, bath time and sometimes bedtime. She has older sister- Weronika. She is 15 years old. Every day I cooked dinner for the girls and prepared meals, for all day, for Kinga. When it was needed I picked up girls and very often we went somewhere with Kinga by car.
The experience which I gained during the work with children is irreplaceable. In my opinion, works with children made me better person. I became calm and patient, good listener and I am always open to help other. I am very glad, that I have possibility to give children most important skills like reading, writing, counting or even tying shoes laces. They will use these skills for their whole life. Children gives me positive energy, because they are smiling a lot, and it is makes me happy too.
In my high school I participated in exchange programs in Denmark, Hungary and Czech Republic where I lived with host families. That expanded my travel and cultural interest. Being an Au-Pair is perfect for me. I could work with children, improve my language skills, travel, meet people from all over the world, and learn more about culture in other country.
